Da Rules, otherwise known as Fairy Law, is a fairy rulebook written by the Fairy Council that all fairies and their godchildren have to follow and is filled to the brim with rules, guidelines, and stipulations that dictate specifically how a fairy godparent may behave and all the things a godkid can or can't wish for. All of these rules exist to keep both fairies and humans safe from magic being misused in a dangerous way, such as disputes, injuries, or potentially life-threatening consequences that reckless or improperly worded wishes can harbor. Others exist to prevent actual Earth laws being broken. They are usually broken by Timmy, or are used as a plot device to prevent him from simply wishing something away. He is actually the reason a few of these rules exist.

Known rules[]

  1. When a godkid reveals whose fairies theirs secretly are, they and any other witnesses shall have their memories wiped by Jorgen and his agents (who can sometimes make the godchild horribly disfigured) and their fairies and magical items they have come in contact will be taken away by Jorgen.[1] [2] [3] However, if Jorgen doesn't find out, he can't take the godkidā€™s fairies away or if the witnesses understand how much the fairies means to the godchild then said child can keep them under conditions that the witnesses willingly have their memories erased. This rule does not seem to apply if a person who discovers a godkid's fairies has fairies of their own, as Timmy and Remy Buxaplenty discovering each other's fairies did not lead to a rule violation.[4]
  2. A godkid cannot wish or use magic to win a competition, because that would be cheating in a big way, which leads to disqualification for the godchild, and they will lose. This rule also applies to any wishes where the results would allow the child to win a competition if such a turn of events should occur, but it only becomes an issue when the competition begins; as an example, Timmy was free to wish that he was super-intelligent, but his new intellect vanished when he was competing in a game show against another school.[5][6] This does not, however, apply to magic competitions, such as a magical duel (though there are still limitations). (This rule is rarely enforced when wishing for someone else to win a competition)[7][8] This rule can also be circumvented if the godkid is willing to put in the effort to prepare for a competition, because there's no rule against magic being used to TRAIN for a competition, as Timmy was able to in a skateboarding competition against Vicky.
  3. A godkid cannot wish to interfere with true love (this applies to every kind of love, except parental love) under any circumstances and no exceptions permitted.[9][10][11][12][13][14] This is arguably the most common rule Timmy finds himself at odds with on most of his adventures. For instance, similar to that of a genie, he can't wish to corrupt someone's free will and make them fall in love with him.
    1. More relevantly, when there are cases where true love turns out to be an obstacle, the only way to nullify the rule is to find some way of breaking off the source of true love on the subject's own free will. Two examples would involve Chip Skylark and Poof being victims of the rule:
      1. Timmy wishes for the worst possible non-lethal thing to happen to Chip Skylark out of spite for his birthday being forgotten because of his concert being scheduled on the same day, and that turns out to be winding up a prisoner of Vicky's love. When Timmy gets to know Chip and decides to correct his mistake, Timmy can't wish him out of Vicky's clutches due to her insatiable puppy love, mostly spawning from her belief that Chip Skylark is filthy rich as much as talented. However, Timmy saves him by revealing to Vicky that the record company Chip works for pays for everything he has while he just makes them all the money with his bewitching charm and musical prowess.
      2. When Timmy's parents discover Poof, they become instantly smitten with him and adopt him as superbaby. Timmy can't use magic to return him to Cosmo and Wanda because Mr. and Mrs. Turner's love for Poof is official, so the only other way they can get him back is if the two of them forgo him willingly. After realizing they believe Poof is an alien, Timmy rescues him by striking a deal with Mark Chang to pretend he is "Superbaby's" real mom, and they willingly give him up. With that guideline of the wish fulfilled, Poof is returned to Cosmo and Wanda.
    2. Dolefully, it's airtight nature proves itself a tremendous hindrance because the rule has plenty of guidelines for how to nullify it when it becomes an obstacle, but no failsafes for an occasion where any acts of love, even by the will of the one carrying out the act, can lead to self-destructive consequences. This is demonstrated all too clearly in Information Stupor Highway when a horrendously embarrassing love letter is sent to Trixie on Timmy's behalf and Cosmo and Wanda can't retrieve it because just being a love letter (a written document detailing the very concept of love instead of the emotion of love itself) getting out into the world, even by mistake, makes it untouchable.
  4. Fairies are completely powerless against butterfly nets, because of the natural rules of what a butterfly net does. "If it has wings and flies, a butterfly net can catch it". It's that simple.
  5. Fairies cannot directly kill, maim, or injure living beings (but their magic can if it is done indirectly).[15]
  6. If someone interferes with something or someone in the past, it will alter the present and future and they will be forbidden from returning to any point of that same month. However, they would be allowed to time travel to any other month of that year, as long as they do not interfere with presidential elections.[2]
  7. If kids happen to be dominant instead of adults, all the fairies on the Earth will be pulled back to Fairy World.[16]
  8. Pixies can grant wishes instead of Fairies if they are the last Magic creatures on Earth.[17]
  9. A fairy godparent cannot tell their godchild what other kids fairies have; the kid has to find out on their own (Although children can wish to know if a certain person has fairies, as proven in "Fairy Fairy Quite Contrary", when Timmy wishes for Wanda to tell him if Remy's godparent knows her).[18]
  10. No wishing to take away the fairies of another kid (Juandissimo states that from that way lies madness). They have to be wished away by the same kid or lose them in a Magical Duel.[18]
  11. Fairies only grant wishes to miserable people of the dominant species of Earth. If the godchild for whatever reason becomes cheerful or the godkid says, "I'm happy and don't need my godparents anymore," the fairies will leave them and search for another miserable kid. [3]
  12. No wishing for everyone to look the same, because Fairy Godparents would be unable to identify their godkids, and if they cannot grant wishes, it will cause magical build-up, causing fairies to explode (rule was possibly made after ''The Same Game'').
  13. Magic cannot be used on invisible teachers, sleeping clowns, French new wave filmmakers, and those who wear clear glasses as a fashion statement.[19]
  14. No "Super" wishes are allowed (Not in Da Rules, but a small rule created by Cosmo and Wanda for Timmy).
  15. A godkid cannot wish for Christmas occurring every day (Rule was caused by Timmy in "Christmas Every Day") because time wouldn't be able to move forward, real-world events and routines would be thrown out of balance, fairies would remain without their magic, Santa Claus would be dangerously overworked, and the other holiday mascots would be unemployed.
  16. No breakfast wishes after 10:30 A.M.[20]
  17. A godkid cannot wish for a world without girls, as this will kill Cupid, and will cause a war between boys and girls due to lack of love. (Rule was also caused by Timmy in "Love Struck!").[21]
  18. No wishing for someone to be hit by a car.
  19. A godkid cannot wish for a "fake deed" to cover for a lost deed, as doing so would be considered falsifying documents.[22]
  20. If a wish involves something with its own set of rules, those rules also govern the wish.
    1. When Timmy wished for magical kung-fu skills, they only worked when he followed the rules of kung-fu.[23]
    2. When Timmy wanted a batch of Nana Boomboom's award-winning brownies, Cosmo explained that because they're magical, he can only poof them up by knowing the secret recipe.
  21. Wishes can only be granted if made by the godparents' designated godkid, the godkid wishes for their fairies to grant someone else's wishes.[24]
  22. Wishes can only be granted if they are requested in the godkid's own voice, even if their voice has been swapped with someone else's.[25]
  23. Tooth-based wishes must be approved by the Tooth Fairy before they can be granted.[26]
  24. No wishing dead people back to life." They are allowed to wish for a ghost, however, as Timmy was able to make pirates come to Dimmsdale in "Wish Fixers" to make them tell a story.
  25. No wishing for money as that is considered counterfeiting.[27][20]
  26. A godkid cannot wish to steal (i.e. In "Nectar of The Odds", Wanda explains to Timmy that if Cosmo and herself gave him three tickets to a sold-out show, they'd have to take them away from someone else who already owns them). [27][20]
  27. You can only loan your fairy/fairies to someone else for the span of one day, but only if they are at least twice as miserable as the godkid themselves.[28]
  28. When you have reached the age of no longer needing a fairy or when they are completely grown-up personality-wise, they will have their mind erased of all memories involving their fairy/fairies, the fairy/fairies will leave either in the Fairy Cab or with Jorgen Von Strangle and everything magic will disappear forever. If a godkid acts like a kid and does everything a kid does, then they will retain their fairies, however doing so is potentially risky, as the longer a godkid keeps their fairies, the more the fairies will be put in danger of being exposed or captured.[29][30][31]
  29. A godkid mustn't interfere with sleep wishes without permission from the Sand Man.[32]
  30. A godchild may receive a "Fairy-versary" if they have had their Fairies for over one year without exposing them. They are given a muffin that grants anyone a rule-free wish when they take a bite. The only thing they are unable to wish for is a better tasting muffin.[3]
  31. Fairy magic cannot affect super-powerful magical items whose power exceeds their own.[3]
  32. Cloning wishes can only be cancelled when all the clones are in the same room.[1]
  33. One day in a certain number of years, a fairy godparent has to be "bad" and if during that day that fairy godparent cannot be bad, then that fairy has to train to be a fairy again for 5 years at the Godparents Academy.[33]
  34. If all Fairy Godparents in the universe want to have the same godkid, all the fairies must compete in a "Rage in a Cage" match and the winner will have the wanted godkid.[34]
  35. Whoever has a wand has complete control over it, meaning a godkid cannot wish it back, and whoever has the wand has the power to grant their own wishes and the wishes of others, meaning you will have to get it back the old-fashioned way. (According to Da Rules, this rule is called the Finders Keepers Law.)[35][36][37]
  36. Any rule of Da Rules can be removed if one of the fairies "accidentally" cuts a page.[38]
  37. A godkid cannot wish away Da Rules or wish away any of the rules. (Including this one)[citation needed]
  38. A godkid cannot wish away what can last forever. (It is almost impossible even with magic due to their properties)[citation needed]
  39. A godkid mustn't undo wishes for something authentic. [39]
  40. Fairies must always grant the wishes of the godchild when they say, "I wish". [40]
  41. No wishing for an electric car. [41]
  42. If a fairy godparent quits, the position can be filled by any magical wish granting creature. [42]
  43. Fairy magic can't kill cockroaches. [43]
  44. A godkid cannot wish for a famous actor or actress. [44]
  45. If a godkid accidentally wishes to break Da Rules so badly, and then lets someone else touch Da Rules, that person will steal all of the wish power of the fairy stupid enough to grant such a silly wish. If that fairy and the godchild want to get back the wish power, then they have to return all the pages of Da Rules in 48 hours after the wish was granted and if they do not return all the pages, the godchild will have to face The Ultimate Challenge. If the godkid fails to complete the challenge, then their fairy godparent(s) will lose the fairy licenses forever.[45]
  46. If a fairy loses their copy of Da Rules, then that fairy must go back to Fairy World to train to be a fairy again in Fairy Academy for 10 years. This rule was seemingly discarded in later seasons, as Cosmo giving his copy of Da Rules to Norm the Genie resulted in no actions taken against him.[45]
  47. If a godkid injures a holiday icon, causes them to be sick, or do anything else that makes them incapable of performing their royal duties, then that godchild must fix all the consequences they have caused by filling in for said holiday icon until they are back on their feet.[21][46]
  48. Nobody below Jorgen Von Strangle can add to or amend Da Rules. (Made after the events of "Cosmo Rules")
  49. Fairies cannot argue with official-looking green crayon. (Removed after the events of Cosmo Rules because Timmy wrote in Da Rules with a green crayon that every fairy godkid could break Da Rules.)
  50. If a fairy fails inspection, they have to go to The Fairy Academy to train for a millennium.[47]
  51. Every wish made by a godkid must be presently accounted for.[48] (Details in Ultimate Violation section)
  52. If a godkid wishes for themselves or someone else to become non-existent, it will alter the fabric of space and time[45] (Cosmo broke this rule in the episode "I Dream of Cosmo").
  53. If a fairy lets an anti-fairy steal their copy of Da Rules, then that fairy will be demoted to Fairies 3rd Class (when the fairy is demoted to Fairies 3rd Class their wish granting powers are very limited) until that fairy gets the book back.[45]
  54. A godkid cannot wish for themselves or other people to not age. [49]
  55. You-Doo Dolls are dangerous. (technically not a rule, but You-Doo dolls are a major taboo in the fairy world and fairies are encouraged to keep them a secret)[50]
  56. A godchild cannot wish for good grades.[citation needed]
  57. If a godparent loses their wand, they can no longer be a fairy godparent. (in The Wand That Got Away.)
  58. A godkid cannot unwish someone elseā€™s wish.[51] (Timmy broke this rule in "Summer Bummer" and Chloe broke this rule in "Marked Man")
  59. Fairy magic has no effect on armadillos (technically not a rule but could be natural) because of their shells that shield them. (in Teacher's Pet)
  60. Fairy magic has no effect on a smartphone if it has an anti-fairy app; however, if the phone gets affected by electromagnetic waves and gets its frequency canceled, magic can be used to poof it away.
  61. A godkid cannot wish for a licensed brand merchandise item as it is considered copyright infringement.
  62. Humans cannot wish to be fairies (rule was made after A Mile In My Shoes), but can become fairies if they come into contact with magical items such as the Abracadabrium (proven in "A Fairly Odd Summer"), or if fairies themselves turn the human into a fairy (proven by Cosmo and Wanda in "When Nerds Collide").
  63. According to the Evil Bug Addendum, evil bugs do not go away, instead, they look for a new host once removed from their current host.[52]
  64. A godkid cannot transfer nor give away his fairly god parent to another without permission by Jorgan Von Strangle. [53]
  65. You can't mind control anyone (contradicted earlier in Fairly Odder, however).ļæ¼
  66. A godchild can't undo their sibling's wishes.
  67. (Non-canon) You cannot change anything in a universe that is not the Fairly OddParents! universe. (Most likely created after the events of Jimmy Timmy Power Hour 3: The Jerkinators!)[54]

These rules have been featured in the TV show and video games, but there are likely far more rules in Da Rules book that have never come up.

The Timmy Turner Loop-hole[]

GUTT-timmyturnerloop-hole

At the end of A Fairly Odd Movie, after Timmy loses his fairies because he wanted to save them from Hugh J. Magnate Jr., Jorgen tells Timmy that the Fairy Council had created a loop-hole that states the following): "If there was ever a boy named Timmy Turner who has kept and loved his fairies for over 13 years (A fairy council member added "And has saved Fairy World on more than a few occasions", but this part was not written down), and if he promises to make wishes ONLY FOR OTHERS and not for his own selfish purposes, he may KEEP his fairies." Due to Timmy becoming a fairy himself at the end of "A Fairly Odd Summer", the loophole was presumably rendered null and void.

Losing the fairy/fairies[]

There seems to be variations to losing (a) fairy godparent(s) depending on how the child acts them out.

  • If the fairy/fairies are revealed by the godchild on purpose, Da Rules will appear and the fairy/ies will be sucked into it, but the godchild and everyone around will remember they exist and everything they caused will remain the same. Despite this, Crocker and a few other people seem to be aware of Timmy's godparents without any consequence.
  • If the fairy/fairies are taken away by the fairy court, the godchild will never see them again, but will still remember them, and everything he/she had from them will remain. There is also the possibility of the godchild retrieving their fairy/ies if proof is found that he/she is worthy of having them.
  • If the fairies are accidentally revealed (as proven by Timmy, Cosmo, and Denzel in "The Secret Origin of Denzel Crocker"), the Fairy Council and Jorgen Von Strangle will appear and take them away. They will wipe the godparents' memory, the godchild's memory, and the memory of anyone involved. Everything they wished up will remain, however, but if someone spots a godchild's fairy godparents but doesn't figure out who's fairy godparents they are, or the godchild they belong to, they don't have to go away forever (proven by Wanda in "Information Stupor Highway"), but fairy godparents don't have to go away forever if they are seen by something that is not a person. However, in "Pipe Down", Crocker saw Timmy's fairies, but they didn't go away forever although this could be because he couldn't get anybody to see them due to the meteor, and the fact that Timmy wished for no sound.
  • If a fairy is challenged by another fairy or a godchild to a Magical Duel (proven by Timmy in "Fairy, Fairy Quite Contrary", though Remy ended up lucky and secretly got his memory back from Juandissimo), the loser's fairy/ies will be taken away from their godchild, who will forget they ever had godparent/s.
  • If the godchild leaves home (proven by Jorgen in "A Fairly Odd Movie: Grow Up, Timmy Turner!"), that is, if they start living without their parents/guardian(s), the fairies will be lost.
  • If the godchild wishes they were an adult (Proven by Timmy in "The Big Problem"). In the most rare occasion, the fairy bell boy will let the godchild keep their fairy/ies until they are reassigned and will only make exceptions through a bribe. The Fairies also cannot grant any wishes while the godchild is an adult. The godchild will have a chance to prove they're still as childish as always in an attempt to keep their fairy/ies. Although this rule contradicts the previous one, when the godchild becomes an adult, they are supposed to immediately forget about their Fairies.
  • If a wish is made for another species to become the dominant species of life on Earth, the fairies are reassigned to become that species' godparents. (Bippy wished for monkeys to be the dominant species with the Fairy-versary Muffin, so all fairies were assigned to monkey children.)[55]
  • If a godchild says: "I'm happy and I don't need my godparents anymore" (Proven by Vicky In "The Switch Glitch"), their fairy/ies will instantly be taken away, and have a smile stamped to their face. However, the godchild does not forget about the fairies afterward, because in that episode, there was no evidence that Vicky forgot about Cosmo and Wanda. In fact, it was pretty obvious that she did remember having them, considering the fact she complained about how miserable she was without them.
  • If a kid has fairies loaned to them, then the godchild who loaned them will get them back at the day and time they and their godparent(s) agreed upon and the kid who had the fairies loaned to them will forget that they had them when the time runs out. But they will still have everything that they wished up. (proven by Tootie)
  • if a fairy has lost their fairy diploma, then the fairy will have 24 hours to prove that it was handed in. Otherwise, the fairy will be taken away from the godchild. If the fairy who hasn't handed in their diploma is paired with another fairy, then both fairies will get taken away from their godchild.
  • If two godchildren are sharing fairies, if one godchild does something that will cause them to lose their fairies, both godchildren will immediately lose them. However, both godchildren do not forget about the fairies.
  • If the fairy/fairies and/or a godchild makes the fairy/fairies quit, the godchild memories will immediately be purged by Jorgen Von Strangle and everything that the godchildren had wished for will be taken away alongside any magical entity in their household. After this, the fairy/ies and any other magical being will be able to go through a "Fairy Idol" and if the winner is not a fairy, they will become one, and will be assigned to the most miserable child on earth (excluding the same child that said fairies were assigned to before they quit), in an attempt to make them happy. However, a fairy who quits being a child's godparent is considered having quit the position altogether, meaning they have to go the same audition to be reassigned.

Ultimate Violation[]

  • If someone makes their fairies quit, makes a secret undocumented wish (like Timmy and the 1986 Little Joshua Applebee did), or been found guilty of being the worst fairy god child ever by the fairy council, the godchild will get the ultimate punishment that includes: their memory will be wiped out by Jorgen Von Strangle, The Fairy Council, or Father Time, the godchild will never experience having fairies, all of their wishes will be undone (including their secret wish if they made one), those wishes will be sent to Hocus Poconos, their life will be 10 times as miserable and they will not be allowed to be lent fairies. The wish is counted as the ultimate violation of Da Rules because when it is made, it will backfire by causing a secret alteration of the fabric of the universe. (From "Timmy's Secret Wish!")

Trivia[]

Da-yellow-rules

Da Rules as it appeared in the Oh Yeah! Cartoons shorts.

FairlyOddMovie0085

Da Rules book as it appears in A Fairly Odd Movie: Grow Up, Timmy Turner!

  • Da Rules were actually created after one of the notes Butch Hartman was given after he pitched The Fairly OddParents to Fred Seibert and Larry Huber which says that he can't give Timmy unlimited magic. So as he pitched it again, he brought up the concept of "Da Rules" and it became a cornerstone of the show.
  • If Cosmo and Wanda try to wish Timmy up something that goes against the rules, their wands will wilt and make a farting sound. Sometimes when their wands malfunction, the same thing happens. (Example: "Land Before Timmy") In other instances however, Jorgen will appear just as a rule-violating wish is about to be granted to explain why the wish is forbidden.
  • In Season 0 in the pilot episode, "The Fairly OddParents!", Da Rules was colored yellow and the text was colored orange and was changed when it entered season 1. It is also Da Rules' first appearance. Since its change in season 1, Da Rules is now colored purple and the text is colored yellow.
  • Almost all of these rules have affected Timmy in some way, and he has lost or nearly lost his fairies in most of the ways listed possible above. However, he always regains his fairies by the end of the episode/movie.
  • In the past seasons, it was said that each fairy has their own copy of Da Rules. However, in later episodes, there is only one official copy of the book.
  • In "Hassle in the Castle", Cosmo and Wanda made up a rule that Timmy wasn't allowed to come into their castle because they didn't want to spoil the surprise about the Hall of Timmy.
  • It is shown that Juandissimo Magnifico's copy of Da Rules is entitled "El Rules".
  • There was a live-action Da Rules book, for A Fairly Odd Movie: Grow Up, Timmy Turner!. Here a special loophole is made for Timmy in gratitude for his loyalty to his Fairies and his saving Fairy World on several occasions. It allows Timmy to keep Cosmo, Wanda, and Poof, so long as he uses their magic for the good of other people. In addition, Tootie is allowed to know about their existence and presence.
  • In the episode "Cosmo Rules", when Timmy started altering the contents of Da Rules, the world was in chaos. Jorgen mentioned that if the chaos continues, Da Rules will burst and destroy the entire universe. That being said, the greater purpose of Da Rules is to keep the universe together.
  • Only Von Strangles (meaning having their blood line) can contain the magic in the rules, as stated in "Cosmo Rules".
  • Da Rules have control over the Rule-free wishes and do not allow them to be given to godchildren unless there are certain conditions to be met (such as a Fairy-versary Muffin or a reward from a competition). Additionally, when godchildren are given rule-free wishes, they are given only a limited amount.
  • In "Abra-Catastrophe!", Jorgen was seen reading a giant Da Rules.
  • Beginning in Season 9, Da Rules are constantly broken or ignored, mainly either due to being used as a plot device or for the sake of plot convenience. In addition, the writers started to abandon or rewrite continuity to accomodate new characters or plots.
  • It's likely that it had forbid the fairies from ever using the Magic TV Remotes again following the events of Channel Chasers, mostly because of Vicky.

Known rules that haven't appeared in the series/games[]

  • Fairies cannot have children with non-fairies.
